Regulators Fine Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield

Regulators in California have fined Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield $250,000 for failing to provide consumers with accurate provider directories, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

Consumers had difficulty locating doctors that were “in-network” and incurred unforeseen medical bills because they unknowingly went out of network for care, the Times reports.

Action 2 News reached out to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Department of Justice in Wisconsin to see if similar issues were reported here. The Wisconsin Department of Justice says matters in Wisconsin are handled by the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. J.P. Wieske a Public Information Officer at the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance told Action 2 News on Thursday that he could neither confirm nor deny if Wisconsin was investigating Anthem for similar concerns. He also said that comments can only be made after an investigation is concluded.

Meanwhile, California regulators said Anthem must improve on the accuracy of their provider directories and reimburse members who “may have been negatively affected by the misleading information.”
